Fly fishing is a fun and exciting sport. There are a few
things the beginners need to know before they can jump into the action, but the
things you need to know are easy to learn and understand.
What do I need to
know about fly fishing rods?
The first thing you need to learn about fly fishing rods is
the names for the pieces of the rod. The part of the rod that you will be
holding in your hand is known as the butt. The round metal loops that the line goes
through are called guides. The last one or two guides on the rod are known as
the stripping guides. Whether the rod has one stripping guide or two will be
decided by the weight of the item. The remaining guides are called snake
guides, except for the guide that is placed on the very end of the rod. This
last guide is the tip-top guide. Do not call this the tippy-top guide unless
you are a seven year old girl, or other anglers will not take you seriously.
The place where the reel is designed to sit on the rod is
known as the reel seat. The reel hangs downward so that it is positioned under
the rod when you are fishing. There are flat pieces emerging from the top and
the bottom of the reel that are known as feet. The feet of the reel will be
slid into slots on the reel seat and then they will be down locked or up locked
into place depending on the way the metal piece that slides over the feet
moves. There is also a locking ring that will be screwed against the other
locking piece to secure it in place.
String the rod properly by pulling some string off of the
reel and fold it over so that it is doubled. You then make sure the rod is
positioned so that the guides are facing you. Walk to the end of the rod while
you are inserting the fly line into the guides. At the end there will be a
really small guide that is designed for you to hook your fly into, not for fly
line to come through.
What do I need to
know about fly fishing knots?
When you are concerned about what do I need to know about fly fishing knots and techniques the
first thing you need to know is that you need to relax. You will need to learn
a couple of simple knots in order to tie your fly on properly. When you are
first starting out knowing basic knots like the clinch and the surgeon’s knot
will likely get you through the day. You can learn these knots by looking at
the knot instruction booklets that come with most new reels. You can always
learn from other anglers as well and should be ready and willing to listen when
an angler decides to share some knot tying techniques.
